This Underground Data Center In Sweden Looks Like A Real-Life Bond Villain Lair
The Pionen White Mountains bunker is located 100 feet below
ground and shielded by 16-inch-thick metal doors, all within a few miles
of Stockholm, Sweden.
The bunker was used by Sweden’s Civil Defense in the 1970s
but was decommissioned and converted into a data center in 2008 by
Internet service provider Bahnhof.
It took more than two years to blast out 141,000 cubic feet
that Bahnhof needed to fit all their backup generators and server racks
into the caves.
One company that also used this space as a data center HQ was WikiLeaks...
In 2010 the bunker housed the servers for the website here
because the country has one of the world's strongest laws to protect
confidential source-journalist relationships.
And while most data centers are stationed in warehouses, this one looks almost like a Bond villain lair...
With its glass-walled conference room, 1970s memorabilia, and of course, its unique waterfall features.
Bahnhof Chairman Jon Karlung says the plants and waterfalls were inspired by the 1972 Bruce Dern sci-fi film "Silent Running."
The bunker even has greenhouses, simulated daylight, a huge
saltwater fish tank, and two huge submarine engines that act as backup
power generators.
The company says that their employees feel happier working in this environment, and are more productive.
Who wouldn't be more productive when they're working from a Bond-esque hideaway?
And if you're wondering how safe you are working here, this bunker was originally built to survive an atomic bomb.
Sounds like a workplace dream!
